Hans J. Wegner was a prolific designer, as his many works could vouch for that, as he has created some of the most unique and remembered chairs and other furniture throughout his career. The Wingchair Armchair or the Wingchair Ch445 Armchair was first introduced in 1960, the same year as the Ox chair, but after, and the Wingchair is said to be within the traits and characteristics of the Ox chair. This is Wegner’s trademark way of creating parentage or historical ties between his creations, and although both chairs ran in limited production when they first came out, mainly due to misinterpretation, it was later resumed and is now considered a sure right classic. Carl Hansen & Son of Denmark now officially distribute the Wingchair Armchair since 2006.

With the rebirth of the chair through the original sketches from Wegner, the manufacturer has been for some time producing the chair in a made to order format, breathing new life into the creation. This chair has inspired many designers and artists to push the boundaries of their designs to represent something bold and innovative. Carl Hansen & Son aim is to keep as close to the original design as possible, and keeping it hand made in the construction, and especially staying close to the original materials like the hand sewn piping and beech frames.

The Wingchair Armchair undoubtedly a Wegner design and like many of finest chairs, his sculptural lines and flow that allows it to be poised on its own as well as part of a setting in any environment. The chair is made in either fabric of Halingal or leather with a stainless steel under frame. The Wingchair is also known for its calm, serene, and consistency of its original design that the manufacturers needed to retain. Most noticeable visual attributes are the armchair’s distinctive back with its corner angles, shoulder grooves and its upholstered armrests.

The chair is assured comfort as it wraps the individual up its generous relaxation, as you seem to automatically sink into it. Then your back discovers the specially placed grooves that hug at shoulder level and at the right angle for optimum comfort and support. The head is also provided with ample support due to the carefully crafted curved angles of the backrest as well, and if you decide to position yourself otherwise, you will find the armrests are more than capable of supporting your legs or even your head. This chair also represents the strong ethics of ergonomics that Wegner cautiously crafted into his chairs, providing superior comfort and functionality. The dimensions of the chair consist of a height of 103cm, a width of 90cm, a depth of 97cm, a seat area of 40cm, and an armrest length of 63cm.

The beauty of Wegner’s boldness allows for huge flexibility and with the Wingchair Armchair’s clean lines, first class comfort, and ageless appeal are the cornerstones of Wegner’s best work. The chair does not come cheap either with a price of €2,300, but it is worth it for a Hans J. Wegner original. And after being re launched it has won a couple awards at the IMM Cologne in January 2006 and at the Copenhagen International Furniture Fair in May of that same year.
