LASIK is a surgical procedure for eye correction or eye surgery. The acronym stands for Laser assisted insitu Keratomileusis. It is developed to correct myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness), and astigmatism. After a successful operation, the patient does not have to wear any corrective eye glasses or contact lenses anymore. No more maintaining lenses, no need to continue with eye drops, no more groping for your eyeglasses. Patients will get back their healthy eyesight.

This procedure was originally conceptualized in 1963. Doctors specializing in eye diseases and disorders developed a tool called excimer laser. It makes certain invisible molecules take shape and materialize when some elements are excited. The Denver Optical Society of America announced the completion of the prelude LASIK excimer laser in 1973 and the first patent of LASIK was issued in 1989.

Not all ophthalmologists have the license to perform this operation. It is important for patients to get several opinions from different surgeons since the eye ailment may still be corrected by a non surgical procedure. Although 95 of patients get back a 20/20 vision, there is no question about the risk that 5 of people who have undergone this operation get complications.

There are websites in the Internet like http://AboutVision.Com and http://LasikSurgeryFacts.Net that all offer valuable information regarding the LASIK procedure and its associated costs. In the former website, mentioned, a LASIK surgery candidate may look for doctors who are licensed to perform the operation. It also lets the patient review the doctor’s credentials before making a decision. A patient needs to review a potential doctor’s LASIK educational background, history, patient recovery, and medical philosophy. These are the things that one needs to find out to make a decision.

A lot of LASIK candidates simply reject the idea of the surgical operation once they hear the associated costs. LASIK surgery is expensive and may not be practical. The general cost is a few thousand dollars and such amount can make people think again, whether to pursue the operation or not. It is not so much a hassle to wear eyeglasses for the rest of someone’s life. With the economy as it is right now, practicality plays a big part. Spending for education or some meaningful expense is a wise thing to do rather than pay for an eye surgery that can be left out if the eye problem is really not that serious. But there is good news. There are foundations and companies that offer financing schemes and loans for LASIK candidates. One of these companies is Capital One. This firm offers a loan with no down payment required. You can also select a monthly payment scheme that fits your current budget. Interest rates are low as 5.9 to 13.9 . You can also have an easy 60 monthly plan to pay your loan.

Remember to consider these things before making a decision to undergo LASIK procedure. Consult several LASIK specialists. An honest doctor will tell you that you are not a candidate for the procedure and that your eye problem may still be corrected using different and cheaper methods.
