Lights set the mood of any room in the house. It compliments the fixtures and furniture and generally enlivens the ambience of the room. Back in the days before Thomas Alba Edison invented the bulb, people only had lamps, torches and candles as sources of artificial lighting. The oil lamps and candles were placed in intricately designed stands along alleyways and general thoroughfare. Although this was economical, it was not that beneficial because lamps and candles can only illuminate so much space.

In time, lights have evolved from simple incandescent bulbs to fluorescent lamps to complex lighting systems. Today, there may be thousands of designs of bulbs and lighting fixtures with varying wattage and energy consumption but there are still two main categories of lighting systems. These are the task lighting and functional lighting. Task lighting systems are designed for purposes necessary to accomplish work. These lights are concentrated and have higher energy consumption. Functional lighting is designed to accent and enhance surroundings or to give focus to something like a portrait, billboard advertisement, or an interior decor.

Lights, no matter what is its purpose or how complex are the designs, are used only four ways: down lighting, backlighting, front lighting, and uplighting. Downlighting is very common in all industrial places and houses. Lights are positioned high in the ceiling to light the area below. Uplighting is used to reduce the glare from surfaces that are likely to reflect lights. Front lighting makes objects appear flat, as there is no shadows cast. Backlighting is commonly used in gadgets where little bulbs are placed around the electronic device to add accent.

There are many companies specializing in lights, lighting fixtures and lighting systems. Among these are General Electric or G.E. lights and Phillips lights. These brands are commonly used for homes. There are other manufacturers that concentrate production for the other different purposes such as Christmas lights, streetlights, disco lights, and more. There are many sites in the Internet where you can find these lights and even make a purchase. There are also many websites that gives information regarding lights so you can make a wise decision before making a purchase. One of these is http://LightingSystems.Net.

Whenever you buy lighting fixtures, you need to keep several things in mind such as the voltage, transformer outlet, the assembly, and of curse the wattage and electrical consumption. Lights will eat up a lot of your electricity so you might want to consider buying one with a built in photocell. Photocell is something like a brain to it. It determines if it is already night or day. During the day, the light will just automatically shut down. This type of lighting fixture is commonly used in streetlights so they automatically shit off power when the sun is up.

To wrap it up, lights are a wonder and they can make your room either happy or gloomy. Lights can create that emotion and induce feelings if used properly. Always remember though, that lights can cause hazard and electrocution if not handled properly, so always practice caution.
