Choosing the right style for a room in your house can be a daunting process. Even if you work with a professional it helps to have an idea of your design preferences as a starting place. You may want to stick too one distinct theme or you may choose to integrate various themes that appeal to you. Whatever you choose it will help to keep a few pointers in mind.

Choosing a Style

Before beginning your project you will need to decide if you will be working with an interior designer or doing it yourself. Do you have a personal style that you want reflected in your home? Is the architecture of your home a particular style that you want to also have reflected in the interior design? A designer will usually conduct an in depth interview with you to learn as much as possible about you and your lifestyle. The style you chose should always reflect the people who live in and use the home. If you decide to work with a designer, choose one who will bring you several choices and work with you as a partner.

Integrating Styles

If you decide to use to two completely distinct styles, such as cozy county and urban contemporary, it is best to use subtle touches. The room could be predominately one style, for example contemporary, with smaller complimentary country elements interspersed throughout the room. Larger contemporary pieces, such as the sofa or entertainment center, would give the room modern appeal, while the country elements would bring the rural warmth of a vacation cabin. A single larger piece in the country style could also work with a unified color scheme. Fabrics can additionally bring the two styles into compliment using juxtaposed patterns in the same color family. Integrating collections can also bring depth to a room and are best displayed in a vertical line. Rooms with mixed styles can often be the most interesting in the house when accomplished in the right way.

Wood

Wood stain comes in many different shades and colors – mixing too many shades can mean disaster for a room. Likewise mixing faux wood finish with too many types of real wood can lead to an incoherent aesthetic. Woods can be mixed if colors are kept in the same hue, but placement of the pieces should be balanced within the design layout of the room as a whole.

Paint

If the room will be more than one color make sure you have already seen the colors next to one another in a large enough swath. Also make sure adjoining rooms are painted in a color that goes well with the new room. While some color palettes work well together, such as blues and browns, other colors can clash, such as salmon and bright pink. Also decide if the ceiling will be painted the same color as the walls. Lighter colored ceilings are more traditional. Some colors however when applied to ceiling and walls can create a richer environment for a special space. If you are considering a textured wall, be sure you like it before you finish the whole space – it can be difficult to remove.
