Things To Know Before Getting A Pet

Many families yearn for that special pet to help make their family complete, yet do not consider all the factors and responsibilities involved in feeding and caring for a dog, cat, or even a fish. The responsibility, of course, lies with the entire family and must be taken seriously from the start.

Many factors need to be considered before getting that special family member. A strong relationship or bond will be developed with your new pet. Pets require love, care, nurturing and training. All these things require time and patience. The next thing to consider is budgeting for your new pet. Make sure you can afford to buy its food and toys as well as its health and medical needs, especially its puppy shots and heart worm medicine. Put expenses for your pet in your budget and see if it fits. Third, is the size of your home. You must gage what size animal can comfortably fit in your home, and also what size animal YOU are comfortable with in your home.

For example, getting a dog is a large resposibility. They need considerable space to run and walk and may need an outside kennel as well as inside. If you have no yard, you must be willing to take your dog for walks 2 to 3 times daily for excersise and for potty breaks. Dogs need to see the veterinarian reqularly in order to get the appropriete vaccinations and for heart worm medication. Also, have a plan on where to leave your dog if you need to go on vacation or out of town for several days and can t take them with you. It s almost like having another child in your home.

Cats are wonderful pets and do not require as much care as a dog. However, they still need to see a veterinarian for the same reasons as a dog, and they need food, treats, bedding etc. Cats have different challanges such as they like to scratch their claws, and they will try to do that on your furniture and doors. It s best to have a scratching post that they know is dedicated only to scratching. Cats love to play, especially when they are kittens, therefore, they need lots of attention and toys to play with.

Birds are a good choice for some homes. Always remember, whichever the pet, you must keep a clean environment for any pet. This is no different for birds. They are very messy little animals, spreading seeds everywhere. And that has to be swept daily. Their cages need weekly cleaning. Fresh water and food every day is necessary for the health of birds and you need to make sure you keep a variety of bird seed available. The also require millet spray (bird treat), cutlet bone (calcium bone) and toys.

Pets give pleasure and fulfillment to deserving families. All you have to remember is that your pet is a PART of your family. You must treat it with the same love and caring that you do with any other member.
