Since 1985 the Discovery Channel has been bringing fascinating scientific and historical facts to TV viewers around the world. The channel has become renowned for bringing facts to people who may not have acquired them otherwise.
With a focus on scientific application to daily life, the Discovery Channel has a worldwide following of people who can't get enough. The channel brings reality based programs that not only educate, but entertain.
The entertainment aspect has been key in the channel's mainstream success. For example, the show Dirty Jobs, which is hosted by former opera singer Mike Rowe, is popular due to the element of true life comedy of Rowe failing miserably at his job of the week.
Dirty Jobs is not the only popular show on the Discovery Channel, however. Other popular shows, such as Mythbusters, have grown to be enormous successes. Mythbusters is a show where adages, myths, urban legends, and common misconceptions are put to the test when special effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman test whether or not the aforementioned myths are even possible.
Another show that has gained popularity is Cash Cab, hosted by comedian Ben Bailey. The show is popular due to the random nature of which contestants are chosen and the fun nature of the show's format. Another yearly staple of the Discovery Channel is Shark Week.
Shark Week, as the name states, focuses on programs involving sharks and is very popular. Other shows that are very popular include Fight Quest, which features two young men going around the world learning fighting methods. There is Deadliest Catch, which follows a commercial fishing crew that faces constant dangerous conditions.
Another show that has not only gained popularity, but also controversy is Man vs. Wild, which is hosted by British survivalist Bear Grylls. The show gained controversy when it was revealed that the host and crew had to stay in hotels during filming, due to the high risk associated with the show. However, this has not stopped the show's popularity from rising.
The Discovery Channel has grown to be one of the biggest channel's on television despite the programs that are filled with things that have been putting high schoolers to sleep for years. The channel is over twenty years strong and still growing year by year. While not everyone may get to go out and see the world, every night the world can be right in front of your couch.
