Endocrine surgery is a highly specialized field that concentrates on glands of the body like the adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid glands. When treatment is required in one of these glands it is important to learn the basics of endocrine surgery, since education is the first key to success. Some of the facts about this field of medicine might be surprising.

Finding an Endocrine Surgeon
Since endocrine surgery is still a relatively uncommon field of medicine with only about 200 endocrine surgeons nationwide, it is possible that endocrine surgery will be performed by a general surgeon rather than an endocrine specialist. In fact, the large majority of endocrine surgeries that are done in this country every year are done by surgeons who spend only a small portion of their time working in this area. While this may be a source of concern for some, the fact that these surgeons perform the bulk of the endocrine procedures leave patients little choice in who will perform their surgical procedure.

If a patient is fortunate enough to find a doctor who specializes in this field to perform endocrine surgery, that patient can rest assured that the track record for that specialist is probably going to be at the top of the statistics. While some of these doctors began their practices in general surgery, gradually developing a field of specialty in endocrine procedures, others are now entering their schooling and training with an endocrine specialty in mind. Endocrine surgery can be used to treat a whole host of conditions that affect the many glands of the body.

What they Treat
Finding a surgeon who specialized in endocrinology is only half the battle. The next step is to understand exactly what these doctors can treat through Florida endocrine surgery. The thyroid gland is one of the main sources of interest for an endocrine surgeon, since this gland is responsible for the regulation of the body s metabolism. The adrenal glands are another important area for this field. These glands are located on the top of each kidney and perform the function of regulating blood pressure and fluid levels in the body.

The four parathyroid glands are found behind the thyroid and are responsible for secreting their own hormone that helps to regulate calcium levels in the body. There are also neuroendocrine glands in the pancreas that control blood sugar, an important function in preventing diseases like diabetes. The pituitary gland controls many of the other glands and organs like the thyroid, adrenal gland and the ovaries.

When the endocrine system is the cause of problems in the body, an endocrinologist may be called in to examine the patient and diagnose the illness. If surgery is required and the patient is lucky enough to have an endocrine surgeon in the area to contact, this is the often the best choice for treatment. However, there are many good general surgeons who are also quite competent to perform many types of Florida endocrine surgery as well. A patient should be primarily concerned with finding a doctor who has had success with the specific procedure in the past to ensure successful treatment.
