What can you do when your guitar is found laying in a place full of water in your flooded house? Is it practical to fix the considerable ruin to the instrument that has been the source of untold enjoyment over so many years? Some folks would believe their guitar is ruined and should be thrown away. This is often not the case. If you get the soaked guitar to a water damage restoration pro rapidly enough, it can likely be rehabilitated. This could be an expensive process so it is necessary to determine how valued the guitar is before you resolve to restore it rather than get a new one. Find a certified and insured master guitar repair specialist. Check their references to be positive that the water damage restoration professional is good.

A water damaged guitar might sustain a distorted neck, marred finish, neck coating peeling, oxidization of the string section, screws and support handles and glue becoming disengaged. There are some steps that are necessary to be assumed to reestablish a water damaged guitar. Firstly, take off the strings, pegs, and the bridgework. Remove any added parts. Then the devastated varnish needs to be taken away. This can be accomplished using wet/dry sandpaper of a fairly rough grit to take the polish off. The neck and body have to be cleaned with rubbing alcohol to better serve to evaporate any lingering wetness. When the finish is totally taken away, it should be slung up to air out and dry. This can demand several weeks.

As the guitar is drying, the hardware, pegs, and screws should have the corrosion withdrawn with a soft brass applicator and light oil. Rub the pieces dry and shine with a lint free cloth. Set these parts off to the side until the rest of the restoration has been done.

If the neck and keyboard of the guitar was curved and twisted, the neck must be set straight if the guitar is to be saved. This is done by removing the frets and fastening the neck very firmly to make a flat fingerboard. Then the neck has to be evenly heated until the cement under the keyboard becomes flexible. With the neck fastened in its new position, the paste under the keyboard is set. After staying clamped for many days, the neck and head of the guitar must be sheared and remodeled as well as sanded to take off shedding coating. When the keyboard is set correctly right, it should be sanded and oiled.

The neck and head must be sanded and coated with linseed oil and mineral spirits over and over again. After this is over, to finish the neck and head, new frets should be put in. Then the protracted operation of sanding and finishing the body commences. This may necessitate many coats to achieve a nice veneer. When the veneer is finished the hardware, bridgeplate, and pegs must be exchanged. The strings can then be put on. When there is pressure on the neck of the guitar from the strings, the fingerboard and frets require to be attuned as well as additional pieces of the components to fine tune the mechanics of the strings. Once this is achieved, the water damaged guitar renovation has been done.
